Planetarium

planetario2

The Planetarium offers visitors the chance to learn more about celestial phenomena. It is housed inside a dome with a diameter of 8 metres, and seats up to 54 people. The ZEISS ZKP21 can simulate the daily or annual movement of the various celestial bodies, the nature of the sky in any latitude on Earth and the precession of the Earth’s axes. Motions can be combined so as to visualize a range of singular effects, such as observation of the sky from a space station or from the Moon, etc. The planetarium is also equipped with a further system of projection which enables the use of modern digital technologies. The explanations of the celestial phenomena are provided by astronomers from the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory (Florence).

Sessions are organized for school groups or the general public, and focus on themes ranging from observation of the sky to mythology and astronomy in The Divine Comedy and the history of art and of science (Galileo). Classic topics in astronomy, such as the motions of the Sun, Moon and planets, nebulae, galaxies, the Milky Way and the precession of the equinoxes, are also covered.

Lessons for schools are graded to suit the class level, and the explanations are facilitated by the use of multimedia projections.
